Jaroslav Bendl, PhD

My long term research interests involve the development of algorithms and pipelines focused on translational and medical bioinformatics. My undergraduate academic training provided me with an excellent background in computer science. During my doctoral studies, I applied this knowledge to solve a variety of problems in the area of human health and protein engineering. My solutions were mostly based on the application of machine- and ensemble-learning algorithms but involved also dynamic simulations of the multi-enzyme system based of Michaelis-Menten equations and simulation of enzyme changes in atomic force-fields. To gain necessary insight into the medical and biological background of my work, I have closely collaborated with the International Clinical Research Center at St. Anne’s University Hospital, Loschmidt Laboratories at Masaryk University and university biotechnology spin-off company Enantis. 

 

These collaborations allowed me to participate on eight peer-review articles (three of them as a lead author) and one book chapter. Also, four of these articles were supplemented as web servers; to date, they were used by more than 2,000 users. For my postdoctoral training under Dr. Panagiotis Roussos, I continue to build on my knowledge in medical bioinformatics by moving towards the mechanisms of neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases. Currently, I am leading integrative analysis of multi-scale omics data (genome, transcriptome, epigenome, proteome) generated in human postmortem brain tissue in cases with schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disease and Alzheimer’s disease as part of several consortia, i.e., PsychENCODE, CommonMind and Accelerating Medicine Partnership for Alzheimer’s Disease.
